In early March … I got leave and we went home for my 22nd Birthday and Henry arrived on the 13th. So we celebrated out two birthdays on the 14th for the first time. Two days later we returned to Binbrook together, travelling up by train. It was so crowded we were packed together like sardines even in the corridors. We travelled the whole way up to Lincoln like this. He went back to High Wycombe on 18th. It had been a marvellous few days.
On April 1st 1945 the base at Binbrook was disbanded. The war in Europe was rapidly coming to a close. The Armies in Europe were gradually overrunning France and Germany and Russia was coming in from the East.
I was posted to 1st Group HQ Bomber Command at Bawtry….
